Na de negen op negen van de Rode Duivels in de WK-voorronde, gaat alle aandacht weer naar de nationale competitie. Club Brugge moest vreemd genoeg al twee dagen na de laatste interland aan de slag tegen KV Oostende, maar Hans Vanaken en co leken daar weinig last van te hebben. Debutant Sowah bleek een heuse aanwinst. Noa Lang was weer ‘outstanding’ en na de uitsluiting van Steven Fortes zeilde blauw-zwart naar een riante zege (3-0). Het kwam daarmee alleen aan de leiding.
Union kon de koppositie nog overnemen, maar kwam niet verder dan een gelijkspel in Genk. Beide ploegen hadden kansen bij de vleet, maar zelfs Onuachu vond het doel niet. Kort voor tijd scoorde hij dan toch van op de stip. Een betwistbare strafschop. Op televisie was het commentaar van de onvolprezen Franky van der Elst ‘te licht’. Wellicht heeft hij gelijk, omdat de intensiteit niet al te groot was. Ik vond het echter een penalty, omdat Bongonda ondanks de lage intensiteit uit balans wordt gebracht en de aanvaller altijd het voordeel van de twijfel moet krijgen. Toch vond ik het een vorm van rechtvaardigheid dat Undav in de 95steminuut gelijkstelde. Genk zakt daardoor naar de vijfde plaats.
Behalve Union tellen ook Charleroi en Standard slechts één puntje minder dan Club Brugge. De Carolo’s namen een sensationele 0-2 voorsprong in de Ghelamco Arena. Castro-Montes nam de aansluitingstreffer voor zijn rekening, maar na de uitsluiting van Gholizadeh op slag van rust lag de weg open voor een Gentse zege. Depoitre stelde gelijk, maar in de slotfase kwamen de bezoekers enkele keren dreigend opzetten en in de 96ste minuut devieerde Hanche-Olsen een poging van Morioka in eigen doel (2-3). Wat heb je aan een 6-1 zege tegen Club Brugge als je nadien thuis de punten laat liggen tegen Charleroi? Met zeven punten uit zes wedstrijden stellen de Buffalo’s fel teleur. Een heel matig Standard won de eerste Luikse derby in 25 jaar: 0-1 bij Seraing, maar doelman Bodart was de uitblinker.
Antwerp telt (slechts) één puntje meer dan AA Gent, omat het een wenkende crisis kon afwenden dankzij een zuinige zege in Eupen (0-1). De Great Old mocht niet mopperen, want de VAR keurde drie keer een doelpunt van de Panda’s af vanwege een te lange teennagel. Echt lekker loopt het nog steeds niet bij de Antwerpenaars.
Dat kon dit keer niet gezegd worden van Anderlecht. De tijd leek plots minstens tien jaar teruggezet in het Lotto Park. Na een moeizame eerste helft, waarin KV Mechelen veruit de betere was (1-1), geraakte het Brusselse instituut plots onder stoom. Weer eens bleek voetbal een spel van twee helften. Aanwinst Kouamé liet zich opmerken met twee goals, maar ook Murillo en de invallers Amuzu en Zirkzee (alle drie met een doelpunt en een assist) deden een duit in het zakje: 7-2, een resultaat dat Sporting zou kunnen lanceren.
Tot slot nog de knappe ‘remontada’ van Cercle Brugge aanhalen. De Vereniging boog in het Regenboogstadion in Waregem een 2-0 achterstand om in 2-4 winst. En de eerste zege cvan OH Leuven (2-1 tegen KV Kortrijk).
EUROPA
*Manchester United-Newcastle was een doordeweekse affiche, maar werd plots de wedstrijd van de speeldag. De comeback van Cristiano Ronaldo zette Old Trafford in lichterlaaie. Zelden rolde zoveel lawaai van de tribunes. En de Portugees stelde zijn fans niet teleur. Hij scoorde twee keer (het eerste en tweede doelpunt van de thuisploeg, weliswaar met een beetje medewerking van doelman Woodman) en bracht zijn totaal daarmee op 787: duizelingwekkend.
Het was niet het enige cijfer dat indruk maakte. In de afgelopen week werd het nieuwe shirt van CR7 het meest verkochte in de geschiedenis van de Premier League. De teller stond voor de wedstrijd op 210 miljoen euro en daar zullen er na de wedstrijd nog wel vele duizenden aan zijn toegevoegd.
Commerciële overwegingen hebben beslist meegespeeld bij de terugkeer van Ronaldo, maar het viel op dat dit een zeldzame partij was met Joel Glazer op de tribune. De eerste keer ook dat één van de Amerikaanse eigenaars (samen met zijn broer Avram) in Manchester was sinds de boosheid van de fans na het Super League-debacle. De transfer van de Portugees is ook een vorm van wiedergutmachung met de fans. En wellicht zit er toch ook een sportief aspect aan vast. De Glazers zijn ook de eigenaars van de Tampa Bay Buccaneers, die begin dit jaar de Super Bowl wonnen dankzij de transfer van de legendarische quarterback Tom Brady. De echtgenoot van het Braziliaanse supermodel Gisèle Bündchen is inmiddels 44.
Hoe dan ook, CR7 is dan misschien een ijdeltuit, maar wat hij presteert is en blijft fenomenaal. Op weg naar zijn 37ste verjaardag bewees hij meteen ook in de Premier League nog een rol van betekenis te kunnen spelen. Misschien draait het opnieuw uit op een duel met Romelu Lukaku om topschutter te worden. Ronaldo haalde het vorig jaar in de Serie A met 29 goals in 33 wedstrijden (tegen 21 voor Big Rom). Man U versloeg overigens finaal Newcastle met 4-1.
Lukaku scoorde ook twee keer tegen Aston Villa en dat was nodig, want de ploeg uit Birmingham was geruime tijd de betere op Stamford Bridge. De Rode Duivel maakte echter het verschil (3-0). Manchester City was heel wat zuiniger bij Leicester City (0-1 Bernardo Silva). Kevin De Bruyne bleef de hele match op de bank.
Met Tottenham verloor de laatste ploeg het maximum der punten. De Spurs waren kansloos tegen een sterk Crystal Palace (3-0). Liverpool haalde het bij Leeds United (0-3). Salah trof voor de honderdste keer raak in de Premier League.
Er zijn nu drie leiders in Engeland: Man United, Chelsea en Liverpool. Verrassende vierde is Brighton & Hove Albion, dat bij Brentford won met een doelpunt van Leandro Trossard (0-1).
*Paris Saint-Germain liet Messi en Neymar rusten in het vooruitzicht van het bezoek aan Club Brugge (grapje), maar kende desondanks geen genade met de verrassend sterk gestarte promovendus Clermont Foot 63: 4-0. Olympique Marseille won de derby bij Monaco (0-2), dat slechts zestiende staat. Landskampioen Lille verloor bij Lorient (2-1) en is op de dertiende plaats terug te vinden.
*In de Bundesliga behoudt Wolfsburg als enige het maximum na winst bij Greuther Fürth (0-2). Bayern München is tweede na ruime winst (1-4, één keer Lewandowski) bij RB Leipzig, dat zijn start compleet miste en slechts twaalfde is. Borussia Dortmund is derde. Het won met Meunier en Witsel bij Bayer Leverkusen (3-4, twee keer Haaland).
*Atletico Madrid won in Barcelona van Espanyol (1-2). Carrasco tekende voor de gelijkmaker. De winnende treffer viel in de 99ste minuut. De landskampioen deelt de leiding met Valencia. Real Madrid kwam in het nieuwe Bernabeu twee keer op achterstand tegen Celta de Vigo, maar won dankzij Benzema met ruime marge (5-2). Hazard stond aan de aftrap en speelde 65 minuten. Barcelona moest op bezoek bij Sevilla, maar de partij werd uitgesteld.
*Juventus is zonder Cristiano Ronaldo op de dool. Het staat met één punt uit drie partijen op de zestiende plaats. Dit weekeinde verloor het in Napels, nog steeds zonder Dries Mertens), met 2-1. Doelman Szczesny was weer de pineut. Kampioen Inter deed nauwelijks beter: 2-2 bij Sampdoria en het eerste puntenverlies van het seizoen. Milan deelt de leiding met Napoli, na winst tegen Lazio (2-0). Saelemaekers startte, net als Ibrahimovic, op de bank en ze kwamen samen het veld in. De net niet 40-jarige Zlatan legde de eindstand vast.
Atalanta leed een verrassende thuisnederlaag tegen Fiorentina (1-2). Opmerkelijk waren de ‘Belgische’ goals voor nieuwkomer Venezia in Empoli: Henry (ex-OHL) maakte de eerste treffer van de bezoekers en Okereke (geleend van Club Brugge) de tweede na een solo over 75 meter (1-2).
*Mitchy Batshuayi, woensdag nog onzichtbaar met de Duivels, scoorde twee keer voor Besiktas tegen Yeni Malatyaspor (3-0).
